The Pucan bar is located just off Eyre Square on Forster Street and takes its name from a class of Galway Hooker boat. The Pucan was totally renovated in 2014 following a change of ownership. Although the exterior remains somewhat similar the interior was comprehensively changed with the venue now a much larger venue with multiple bars and stages inside for gigs. Such was the scale of change we have a separate listing for the old Pucan for anyone wanting to look back.

The new pub has been been totally redesigned with many traditional Irish Pub architecture elements such as dark wood bars, intricate wood carving and snugs. However the bigger bar now has 2 live music stages with a bigger stage now in the back bar. The old Pucan was synonymous with Traditional Irish music and Trad music can still be heard in the front bar in the evenings. Late opening nights until 2am with live cover bands and DJs have been added making a viable late night option on this side of Eyre Square.

The food offering has also been revamped with the a wide choice available with an especially large seafood element including oysters from local suppliers. There is a  large selection of craft beer and an extensive Whiskey menu with over 180 at the last count on offer. As well as being part of the Galway Whiskey trail they have partnered with Teeling Whiskey to offer their own blend of Whiskey.

In 2015 they added an essential element in modern bars with the opening on an outdoor smoking area and bar simply called the Garden.

The busiest days at An Pucan are undoubtedly any home game for local rugby team Connacht who play nearby. For many hours before and after the game you can expect a great atmosphere as the venue is packed with supporters.
